The other weekend my girlfriend and I loaded up the truck with bikes and dogs and headed to the mountains. The 6 hour drive from Saskatoon to Calgary was well worth it for the change in scenery. We stayed with family in Bowness and checked out the awesome local bike shop (Bow Cycle).
The next morning we packed up lunches and headed to Kananaskis, Alberta. Kananaskis is a small tourist area about 40 minutes from Calgary and just south of Canmore Alberta. The lakes, river and mountains in the area are absolutely gorgeous. The area experienced some heavy flooding last year, so many of the trails are still showing signs of damage and some are missing bridges.
The mountain biking was scenic, a bit challenging at times but overall super fun. We picked a 20km out and back ride to do and really enjoyed the change in riding style from Saskatchewan. Some mixed forest riding as well as some steep descents and challenging climbs. Other parts of the trail opened up into big mountain vista views.
If you ever have the chance to check out the area, definitely bring along the bikes and check out the trails for yourself.
